THE ENDANGERED SEA TURTLES
Seven different species of sea (or marine) turtles grace our ocean waters, from the shallow seagrass beds of the Indian Ocean, to the colorful reefs of the Coral Triangle, and even the sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific. WWF’s work on sea turtles focuses on five of those species: green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback and olive ridley.
The best time to witness these magical creates are during their nesting season which is between the months of November to April. There are several turtle hatcheries around the area which you can visit and learn about the different types of sea turtles who have made the southern coast of Sri Lanka their nesting grounds. Usually the entrance fee is around LKR 500 per person which goes to helping the injured sea turtles at the hatcheries. |
